What is Mesothelioma?

I am sure that you have seen the commercials on television advertising law firms to represent you or a loved one that has been diagnosed with mesothelioma. What is mesothelioma, you might have been asking yourself, and what can I do to treat myself or a loved one who has been diagnosed with mesothelioma?

Let’s get started by explaining what exactly mesothelioma is. Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer that attacks the tissue which surrounds vital internal organs in the chest cavity, heart, and abdomen. Our body produces a liquid that works as a lubricant, inside our chest cavity, allowing our vital organs to move along side our rib cages without causing agitation.

Did you know that approximately 2,000 to 3,000 cases of mesothelioma are diagnosed in the United States alone. This is a staggering .3% of the cancer diagnosis in the United States. Most cases are attached to exposure to asbestos, and more frequently found in men.

Types of Mesothelioma:

Just like other types of cancer, mesothelioma has different types and stages:

  1. Pleural mesothelioma is ranked as the highest diagnosed amount of mesothelioma cases, which is currently estimated to be at a staggering 75% of the total cases on record in the United States. This type of mesothelioma develops in the lungs and causes shortness of breath, chronic dry cough, night sweats, chronic chest pain, fatigue, and difficulty swallowing
  2. Testicular mesothelioma also one of the least common types of mesothelioma with an average of a 1% reported cases a year. This type of cancer develops in the lining of the testicles and causes, fatigue, shortness of breath, chest pain, and night sweats.
  3. Pericardia mesothelioma is one of the lowest cases of documented, coming in at 1%. This type of meothelioma develops in the lining of the heart and causes many of the same systems of the other types of mesothelioma, such as fatigue, night sweats, chest pain, and irregular heart beat.
  4. Perioneal mesothelioma is the second highest ranked types of cases documented, at  20% percent rate. This type of cancer develops in abdomen and causes abdominal pain and swelling, weight less, fatigue/vomiting, fatigue, and  constipation or diarrhea
